Smoothie bowls are some of our go to dishes in the Allergician/Little Woman household. They are healthy, raw, packed with vitamins and antioxidants and also taste great- just like a dessert!

Smoothie bowls can be eaten to breakfast, or even a large one for lunch/dinner, as a snack or to round off your meal, as an actual dessert.

A popular type of smoothie bowls is the açai bowl, where the little deep purple açai berries from South America are used. Berries in general are usually highly recommended to eat, as they often contain more vitamins, minerals and fibers than fruits. Wild berries is something we humans have been eating for millennia, dare I even say millions of years, and a part of the diet, one could argue, is well suited for us.

Any smoothie bowl would contain of a fruity smoothie as a base, preferably frozen, then topped with fresh fruits and other condiments such as nuts, coconut or granola.

Currently I am on a mission to empty our freezer and in there I found a small container of a ready-made açai bowl, complete with fresh fruit toppings and all. However it was too small to feed both me and the Allergician, hence I decided to expand it with more ingredients. It actually turned out good, and from the small container I was able to stretch out two generous portions of smoothie bowl – perfect to satisfy our breakfast needs.

Now, if you don’t have a ready-made açai bowl lying around in the freezer ( which I wouldn’t expect =D) then you can simply replace that with 100 g of frozen acai puree, or alternatively with 100g of frozen blueberries and a little bit of mango if you have it.

[recipe-ingredients]

Smoothie base
– 150 g of ready-made frozen acai bowl OR 100 g of acai puree /blueberries + 50 g mango
– 2 overripe bananas (they should have some black spots, so they are extra sweet and creamy)
– 40 g frozen strawberries
– 125 ml liquid, e.g. juice or almond milk
– 60 g ice

Toppings
– 1 banana
– 1 kiwi
– 20 g mixed natural nuts- I used walnuts and hazelnuts
– Some coconut flakes

[recipe-directions]
1. Put all the smoothie base ingredients in a high quality blender, for instance the Blendtec Total Classic Original Blender #ad which we use daily, and really love. We bought it ten years ago, and still it crushes everything with ease. For instance, people have been crushing iPhones with the super powerful blender. We can not recommend it enough if you are into vegan or raw food. Also the Vitamix blender is another favorite among health conscious people, but we have never used it so we cannot recommend it. Yet. 🙂
3. Pour the smoothie base into 2-3 bowls
4. Cut the fruit in slices and add to the bowls
5. Cut the nuts in smaller pieces and sprinkle the nuts and coconut flakes on top.
6. Enjoy! 🙂

Variation tips: You can add other fruits as topping if desired. It also fits really well with nut butter or gluten-free granola
